Debra Yates is a Spatial Designer and Visual Artist.
She received her Bachelor of Art degree from Florida State University. She began her career as an advertising agency art director in New York City. As the principal designer of BURLE YATES DESIGN, she has over 35 years of experience as a landscape designer, space planner, abstract painter, and consultant on a wide variety of projects located in South Florida and California. She has completed over 13 public projects, Her residential designs are too numerous to count, and she created 25 large scaled mosaic tile walls and has had 23 solo exhibitions of her paintings. For the past 6 years she has been partnering with her son and design partner, Benjamin Burle. Debra is focused on innovative design approaches for boutique hotels, coastal landscapes,pools and structures. She is known for using indigenous plant species in naturalistic settings. She is the recipient of numerous awards and prizes including the South Florida Cultural Consortium for painting in 2000, The 2014 Design Center of the Americas Designer of the year award for landscape, the Rodel Foundation and Anne McKee Fellowships among many other design and art awards throughout her career. She has completed projects that have been published in the New York Times, Conde Nast Traveler, Garden Design, Casa Vogue, House Beautiful, Florida Design, Modern Luxury Miami, Miami Home and Decor, Indulge and many design books, Most recently BURLE YATES DESIGN had 12 beautiful pages in the Chinese design book, Outdoor Living Design, in 2015 was featured with landscape designer Patrick Blanc in a Miami Herald Article on vertical gardens and in 2016 was interviewed by Garden Design Magazine.
Debra is proud of her long time friendship with Roberto Burle Marx and her 4th generation Key West heritage.
Benjamin Burle has a B.A. degree in Interior Design from The Miami International University of Art & Design and also attended the Masters of Landscape Architecture program at Florida International University. He has worked as an intern for Strang achitecture and landscape architecture firms in Miami while studying for his degree. His high school education in New England boarding school was instrumental in his early life and is where his reverence for nature began in the foothills of Litchfield County, Connecticut. Benjamin has tremendous knowledge of the indigenous coastal landscape of Florida and has a passion for creating naturalistic landscapes. Burle incorporates unique and rare native species of planting material in outdoor gardens, terraces, and courtyards. Burle was awarded The Design Center of the Americas (DCOTA’S) Star on the Rise award in 2014. He has been a design partner of Debra Yates for six years and is incharge of client relations, and on-site management on a range of high-end residential, historic renovation and commercial hotel projects from Key West, Florida to La Jolla, California. Most recently Benjamin was responsible for BURLE YATES DESIGN being shortlisted in an international design competition for a new public park in the fall of 2014 for a property in The Wynwood Arts District in Miami.
